Largest Women's Rights March in U.S. History

They came from Rochester and Romania, from California and the Czech Republic, from Albuquerque and Albania. And they came from Burlington, Montpelier, and rural Vermont, too. Vermont women were there in force to march with their sisters from around the globe when more than one million people filled the mall in Washington, D.C. on Sunday, April 25 demanding justice, privacy, and human rights for women everywhere.

Labor Intensive — The Evolution of Childbearing

Childbirth management has been disputed turf since the invention of forceps by the barber-surgeons of the Middle Ages. Modern-day childbirth practices are governed by organizations that have long been run mostly by men — the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG), founded in 1930, and the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists (ACOG), founded in 1950. These organizations control who practices hospital obstetrics, and how they do it. ACOG and ABOG also influence laws governing childbirth outside the hospital — often in opposition to women insisting on choice in the matter, so that, even now, it is illegal to choose a home birth with a midwife in many U.S. states, including New York.

Summertime in Vermont and the Learnin’ is Easy

Summer is a hot time for continuing education courses in Vermont. Whether it’s the green lawns and beckoning beaches, just ripe for studying, or the long summer days that urge us to renew, stretch, and broaden ourselves a bit, Vermont’s colleges, university, campus centers, and communities are gearing up for a season of enrichment. Since education is such a broad field, and there is so much one can delve into, we decided to hit the topic from three completely different vantage points — adult learner, parent and child, and artisanal. With a full listing of Web sites and course offerings, there’s sure to be something to tempt the lifelong learners among us.
