Jane Run: Women Athletes Set the Pace, But Will Title IX Go the Distance?
When Burlington College President Jane Sanders was in high school
in the 1960s, she used to join the boys in their track workouts
even though she was not allowed in the meets. It was her daughter,
Carina, who got to compete in track and field, as a discus thrower.
What made the difference in just one generation? Title IX of the
Educational Amendments of 1972, which put women in the running
for a full spectrum of athletic and educational opportunities.
Now, after more than thirty years of significant strides, a recent
behind-the-scenes Bush Administration policy change has both women
and men asking, will Title IX be allowed to go the distance for
the next generation?
