Jenni:
Hear the Beat, Feel the Heat
Jenni Johnson, a self-described music “stylist” and
entertainer, has been performing to enthusiastic audiences over
the past decade, from Vermont to New Orleans to Russia. No one
sits still when her band kicks in and Johnson’s voice takes
hold of those present, reeling in anyone within earshot. Johnson
glides seamlessly from Cajun to Blues, soft jazz to rock n’ roll.

Burlington
Mayoral Race - of Jogbras and Jockstraps
Vermont’s largest city can hardly be considered
a politically stodgy place. It gave birth to the state’s
only recognized third party, the Progressives; was one

Made
in Palestine: Meditations on Truth
Vermont is held in high regard as a distinctly special
place – by those beyond our borders but particularly
by those of us who call the Green Mountains our home. Consider,

of 251 towns and approximately 500,000 people. What must

driven from their homes and 418 villages razed, in the
land they called home, as happened in 1948? Their name
for it is Al Nakba – the Catastrophe.

Kids’ Books
Penned in the Green Mountains
Vermont is blessed with dozens of women who write and
illustrate critically acclaimed and universally loved books
for children. Marje Von Ohlsen, the children’s librarian
at the South Burlington Community Library, instantly recalled
thirty Vermont women who author children’s books,
and claims that there are “many, many more.” Elaine
Sopchak, “the book lady” at The Book Rack and
Children’s Pages in Essex Junction, helped narrow
the selection… many thanks to both. The seven picture
books and three young adult books below, chosen for Vermont
or female themes when possible, will make cherished gifts
for the children you love, wherever they live.
